"A large-scale metal sculpture by American artist David Smith has become the most expensive work of contemporary art ever sold at auction, fetching 23.8 million dollars at Sotheby's in New York.

Five bidders competed for Smith's "Cubi XXVII" which was the starting lot at a Wednesday evening sale of 54 contemporary works that brought in 114.5 million dollars."

They say art is suppose to inspire thought. Upon seeing this here are some of my thoughts:

1) Why is this guy wasting good metal?
2) This guy didn't get real good grades in shop class in high school did he.
3) There where a about five individuals there than had more money than common sense.
4) The National Endowment of the Arts has failed miserably.... If there are rich people that will pay this kind of money for this collection of scrap metal then obviously art appreciation is lacking.

5) I know poor people within a mile of my house with similar "pieces of art" in there front yard that get orders from the city telling them to clean it up or they will be fined.

6) Maybe if I give My nine year old a tube of super glue while playing with her wood blocks I could have something similar.

7) was this guys granddaddy PT Barnum?

ROTFLMFAO!!!

Get the fock out of here! I cannot believe for one second that some dood has put down 23 mil on that.

Art is anything you want it to be, truly it is. Eye of the beholder and all that crap.

Well in my eye, that's some Bong Smoker's Sunday afternoon cone session combined with a junkyard throwaway session.

Art my arse! Whatever happened to classy oil paintings? Oh thats right, you have to be dead for at least 200 years before anybody gives a shite.

How many pounds of smack will the 'creator' of this structurally gaudy piece of shite now be able to hook up.

My thought's are to get the ole welding machine out and polish uo some rust iron . I would gladly take half the price for mine and I can guarantee it will inspire thought .
I would be thoughting what to do with 11 something mil. and would definately come up with a idea .

<pseudointellectual>

I think this artist wanted to representate a U shaped magnet, by which he meant a powerful/important person. Using clean metal was meant to imply that the person was someone important, he could've used rusted metal to represent ordinary person. The metal isn't smooth, this means the person has reached his old age. The lower horizontal bar means his hands are tied, and vertical bars are made with multiple pieces, it means he is broke or dependent on others.

This sculpture presented such a moving story so beautifully, the buyer probably felt some connection with it. This is why he didn't hesitate to pay 23 million for something which may seem a piece of junk to lesser humans.

That art represents the essence of mankind. I feel better just looking at it. Ahhhhh.........

Reply to dhlucke

Looks like he should have gone back home and slept it off, I find it hard to believe he was paid money for something that looks like he should have been fired for creating.

Ironically thats probably the guy wanting us to do his homework for him, he copied some little childs toy block creation, and becomes a millionaire.

Go Figure

Art is really subjective. I might not understand why that piece of art fetches $20+ million but I'm sure there are some here that can't understand how a Rembrant does the same thing and 17th century art is what I love the most.

Reply to dhlucke

The difference is, you can see the quality in Rembrandt's work, the attention to detail and you can only guess how long it took him. That pile of shite on the other hand, looks like it was put together by a windowlicker from the special bus in his dinnerbreak. Rembrandt's are priceless, that load of old bollocks is worthless.

Reply to RobD

LOL! if worthless is defined as 23mil...

Reply to RichPLS

Overpriced, by about, oooh....... $22,999,999.99. Yeah, that's about right.

Reply to RobD

How unrefined you must be. Do you eat spaghetti with your hands?

Only a cretin would not see the beauty in that masterpiece. Definitely worth twice what they bought it for.

Reply to dhlucke

I hope the artist enjoys his $23m. I've often been curious as to what Stevie Wonder was up to lately.....

Reply to RobD

I've actually met Stevie Wonder a couple times. He lives out by me and is a really nice guy. He goes surfing every morning along the same stretch as me so I've caught a couple waves with him. He has a custom modified board to help him surf.

Alright that was kind of a low blow, i dont know how old you are but i just got the 35yr old vibe for some reason....you could be 18 for all i know, then again you could be 90....

Are you closer to being an AARP member then your highschool graduation? then you're old.

Reply to pickxx

That might be where Romero got the idea from. I'll ask him. (Seriously. He's at a memorabilia show next weekend, and I've got tickets for it. He's doing a Q&A session, got tickets for that too)

Reply to RobD

I am not saying you dont know where you got it from....but its so close to an extremly famous film character, with eye shadows like that, the shading, the skull shape and everything....its so close.

that would be cool.....when you go to the Q&A ask why there are so many horrible zombie/horror movies.

Reply to pickxx

Haha, I might just do that!

Reply to RobD

I just saw your location, you are into what i would call soccer....

I just wated Top Gear last night with Vinnie Jones on it, he got ejected from a soccer game in 5 seconds!!

The host was like..."how do you even get to a player to hit them within 5 seconds?" he said "i was running flat out"

i love that guy even more now...I never knew he was a soccer player, and that he was a famous soccer player, and that he is known for being a huge badass soccer player.

To me, he is an actor...thats all i know him for because soccer is for girls and homo's

Reply to pickxx

You get Top Gear over there?! Or you d/l'ing it?

I've seen Vinnie play, and as a footballer he's limited to say the least, but by god does he give it everything, and he's as hard as nails too. My team almost signed him (back in '95), the fans were begging him to come, but we couldn't agree a transfer fee. Bastards.

I downloaded all the episodes known to man...from 10/20/2002 to 08/07/05
The file was 26GB, and it has 60hours, 6min, 48seconds.

I have watched the first 6 shows.

i stubled into it when i was looking for a written review of the enzo....i found a video review via google videos....and then about 6months later i found this collection online...so i DL'd it.

Most of the humor translates, but americans take one hell of a beating on that show....lol, and there are some things i dont quite get about certain car companies/certain cars/ or when they talk about certain areas in the UK and i can tell they are making regional jokes (like we make fun of the people in the south and in West Virgina) but i obviously dont get those.

I loved the SRT-10 one....the host kept saying how it was beast and hard to control but a lot of fun...lol. He also said the Corvette wasn't a good car and it rankedVERY high on the laptimes....and they have said hundreds of times americans can't build great cars....even though the fordGT40 was only *slightly* good when it came out, and the new GT was behind only to the Enzo and porcheGT2 and MclarenMercedes....not a bad place to be.

Reply to pickxx

I just looked up the list and it is now 5th....i haven't seen the episodes with the enzo not being #1 (Maserati MC12 is now) or the Ariel Atom....

not bad company to be in none-the-less

Reply to pickxx

It is a great show. They've just started showing the new series, and it's just as good as always. Gotta love The Stig!

Reply to RobD

Excellent show...one thing i know now is the Vox-el (thats how its pronounced) is apparently boring or something....that tall guy always dogs on them...

That tall guy always says americans build the shittiest cars....yet he went out of his way to buy a new GT from ford....I guess even a blind squirrel will find a nut sometimes...

Vauxhall! European arm of GM. And he's right, they are shit. Over here they are, anyway.

Reply to RobD

its so bad, it makes it into every show.

that show always makes fun of the US for not haveing the mpg that you guys have.....but quite often we dont get the same cars, or even those options.

I watch that and see cars that get 35-40 that for us get 20-25 because of engine size, and stuff....it pisses me off.

Reply to pickxx

Yeah, but we pay $1.80 a litre, so that's why mpg is so highly valued. And if you have a big car, engine wise, they tax the bejesus out of you.

Reply to RobD

i know you pay so much more for gas....and its great you have developed ways to get your mpg upto 40-45 and sometimes higher for nice cares that arn't uggo ass smart cars.....but why would they build a 45mpg one for you and then send us a 20mpg one for us? then we get taunted for it....

I know americans seem like we all own SUV's but i hate them and would never own one...PERIOD. I like a good mpg so i dont pay a lot for gas, and it can't look like a geo metro or smart car.
You guys have an STi that is the same as ours but it gets 38mpg and ours get 25. THATS NOT COOL!!

There is NOTHING european about Vauxhall. It's the British arm of GM. The European (German) arm of GM is Opel.

I work as a surveyor and go on/off road quite a bit. As a result, I want sturdy dependable power that I find Chevy trucks give me. Also they are safe and roomy, so much so that I choose to use them as my primary family transportation.
I think that I will always drive Chevy trucks.
But I would not mind better mileage, just do not reduce the HP!

Hey, i dont mind if other peopel have SUV's, my mom has one and my dad has a truck.

its just something people buy for no reason too often. YOu can have an SUV but dont bitch about how low your MPG is.....you chose it.

That last part makes me laugh....its funny how often i hear people say thigns like that...."give me the same power, less gas usage, and cheaper" "i want a bigger tv, i want it to last longer, better image, cheaper but better quality", "i want a faster cpu, runs cooler, more overclockable, and chaper"

its amazing how much we demand as consumers, if we demand too much they skip out on quality.....not singling you out, its something we all do but its funny to think about it someimes.

Reply to pickxx

Well it is true, they do not make them like they used to, but prices have gone throught the roof.
TV's used to last twenty years plus, now if they last 5 years they are antique.

But I do think SUV's and trucks will get better mileage at same or better HP... It looks like it is happening, slowly....

Tv's now fall apart after 5 years because the makers have removed some of the exspensive parts that make them last....it does two things. 1, lowers the cost of the tv, and 2 makes the tv break more often so you buy more tv's.

the reason those old TV's lasted so long is because they had 2 pieces in them that current TV's dont have, and the pieces they do have are made to be CHEAP not made to be QUALITY parts.

Think about it like this....you can get a 27" tv for $160. In 1960 when you bought that TV that lasted 30 years....was it that cheap? even when you ignore inflation a 27" TV would have been more then $16o.

ANd yes, a plasma is a huge cost....but if they sold a $4,000 50" plasma that they told you lasted 5-6years without any precaution, and they sold one that would last 30years without any other precaution for $12,000 NOBODY WOULD BUY THE $12,000 ONE!!!

We want it cheaper and better....quite often when those two are pushed to the limits you will get cheap but not better.

Reply to pickxx

Alright alright alright, you can step out of pedants corner now. My mistake. They're still shit though.
