I have been troubleshooting my firewire card, connection, etc. for days
thinking I had a firewire card setup issue. I did every trouble shooting
that has been posted. I have a Canon XL1s, using AC power, connecting
through firewire. I figured the camera was still fine given "DV IN" displays
on the camera. However after finally going back and forth, I got a friend's
Canon GL1, plugged it into my computer and it found their camera instantly
and brought up the video capture window. Of course when I plug my XL1s into
the firewire I get nothing. Before I put the camera into repair, any
suggestions why the camera does recognize "DV IN" but isn't really fully
connected? Thank you for your time and efforts.

Did you use his firewire cable, or yours?

actually both mine and his were used, each in my camera and in his. Mines
nor his cable worked in my camera. His cable and my cable worked in his.
All cases into my computer, same firewire port.

Faulty firewire port on your camcorder is my best diagnosis.
