Printable DVD's

I've been researching a printer that can print to dvd/cd's for a couple
of months and finally made the plunge. I couldn't be more satisfied.
Based on a post a month or so ago from Mark/Mary Ann, I got a Epson
R200. It's a basic photo printer with the capability to print directly
to disks. The output if simply phenomenal. The real kicker is I only
paid $75 USD for it at Staples after using a coupon. It uses the same
print engine as Epson's higher dollar printers but without the LED and
memory card slot, it's a _whole_ lot cheaper.

I had previously made a DVD in Premier for my daughter with lots of
photos and video clips so I got one of her baby pictures and printed it
on the DVD with a title. While you can tell it's not a commercial
silk-screen print, it still looks _very_ professional. For everyone who
refuses to use a paper label and uses a Sharpie instead, this is a must
have accessory.

And it also prints 8X10 prints from my digital camera that are truly
indistinguishable from what you get from Eckerd/Wal-Mart. Time to give
my old HP 722c to the kids. <vbg>

What brand of printable DVD are you using? I've been tempted to go the R200
routes myself (though I wish I had seen that coupon), but the only printable
DVDs I can find here in San Francisco are Memorex, of which I'm not
particularly fond, and they're only available in quanties of 100 for around
$175.

Spindle of 100 Memorex Printable DVD+R or DVD-R currently
at CompUSA for $99. I just bought my second spindle. I'm burning
with Adobe Encore and Sony DW-U10A and not a single "coaster"
yet. Labeling with my Epson R300 and loving it. They (third parties)
seem to be still working out the bugs on re-filling the (expensive)
ink cartridges.

I've gone into small-scale production of disks of this content...
http://www.professionallyspeaking.org/archive.htm
(I shot the stuff and also put the WMVs online).

OTOH, I got a spindle of printable Ritek CD-R disks and have yet
to sucessfully burn even ONE with the Sony drive(s). Got a short
stack of Memorex printable CDRs (when I got the printable DVD+Rs)
to see if they will work.

Thanks for the recommendation. I see an R200 in my future, especially
if my 750 kicks the bucket. (Or hell, maybe next time it runs out of ink!)

Does the R200 come with full ink tanks or just "trial" versions?

Are there "special" disks required, or will they print, for example, to a
Ritek white top?

Wow! I was just at CompuUSA a few days ago, and the spindle was around
$170 -- I don't remember the exact price.

Okay, you've convinced me to gamble. I'll hit CompUSA tomorrow and pick up
an R200 and a spindle of the Memorex disks.

Thanks!

Good luck finding an R200. I waited months for my R300.
But maybe they have the production hitches worked out now.

By the time you print the disk and the full-page wrap-around
cover for the Amaray DVD case, the ink costs ~50 cents each
(at least by my rough estimate so far).

I'd be interested in your impression of the video on copyright
at the URL above. Pretty basic stuff.

Does anyone know what the diff is between an Epson R200 and Epson 900?
I bought a 900 while I was in Singapore (they get all the latest stuff
before anyone else) and the output on the CD's/DVD's is great!

2 basic differences I can think of is 1.)separate ink cart for each color
2.)5760x1440 print rez. Biggest piece of paper is I believe 8x11.
Corrections and additions to this are welcomed.

I don't understand this thread. The Epson R310 (presumably the
Australian equivalent of the R300) is currently on sale in Melbourne,
Australia, and I was interested in buying one. But I wanted to see
printable DVDs in stock, before doing so. I was told that they will
never come into stock because of the fear that they would be used for
the production of illegal copies of movies. That seems to be a sales
guy's nonsense in view of the comments in this thread, which seem to
suggest that printable DVDs are readily available in the US.

Printable DVDs *are* readily available in the US. Both in
local shops (likely in larger communities) and to anyone via
WWW.

The R300 was in extremely limited supply for several months
after introduction reputedly because of "production problems"
Rumor that they had supply problems with the LCD display or
somesuch.

"Letter" paper size is 8 1/2 x 11, and the R200 supports it according to
the specs.

How familiar with Encore are you? Any idea why I can't get an output DVD to
work?

I bought and tried several other DVD creation applilcations
(adding up to the better part of US$1K) without a single usable
disk to show for it. That was also a year or so ago, and before
I hung around in the DVD Usenet newsgroups where discussion
of free applications is extremely common.

OTOH, I installed Adobe Encore, imported my video and audio
files (from the MPEG export function in Premiere 6.5) and created
disk after disk with no muss, no fuss, no problems, no coasters. I
have not done anything but use the default settings out of the box
OTOH, I will admit that I have not done any fancy menus, etc, yet.

If I were having problems making disks with Encore, I would
likely seek help on Adobe's dedicated blog(s).

Salesmart sells the gloss ink jet ridata media and they are in
Australia.
http://www.salesmart.com.au/dvdrw/dvd_media/

I bougt one of theor sample packs a few months ago and been using
these on my epson printer ever since.

The Epson r210 sells in oz for about $250 does all that the r310 does
but without all the fancy bells and whistles.

Own a Epson 900 too. Both do the same prints as the epson r210 and
r310 that are available in oz.

Epson 900 is one big colour tank where the r210 and r310 tanks are
bloody expensive but have a ink tank for each colour.

Don't recall the brand, but Harvey Norman (Aus) were selling single pack
printable DVD's back in Jan/Feb. They had a white matt finish.
