How fast are your RAID arrays???

I just got my new RAID-0 striped array up & running.....using (4) Maxtor
DiamondMax Plus 9 (7200 rpm, 8MB cache) and SIIG ATA-133 RAID PCI card.

Using HD Tach 3.0, I'm getting about 82-85 MB/sec. transfer rates. However,
only about 45% faster than a single Maxtor drive (not like the 2X speed
increase claimed for RAID-0 arrays). I am using a 512KB stripe size.

I'd like to know what other folks are getting with their arrays. How do the
SATA RAID cards compare in transfer speed to IDE?

What are you doing that needs that kind of transfer rate speed?
Or is this just a horsepower race?

Nothing right now.....unless 1080p desktop NLE becomes feasible in the next
couple years. I was just curious what other people are getting with their
arrays.

I am quite happy with this array. Total cost for (4) Maxtor 160s and SIIG
card was around $500....not bad for a 640GB drive that can play 10 MB/sec.
1080p HD clips with ease :)

Who ever claimed that RAID0 arrays give 2X the speed of a single drive?

People who don't know how they work. ;->

If that is average data speed that is bloody good.

I have two RAID0 here, one is a 2x120 SATA on an Intel motherboard,
that clocked 135 MB/sec burst with an average data rate of 58 M/sec.
Same box has a 2x200 Gig RAID0 on a Promise Fastrack which clocks
around 120 M/sec on HDTach 3.0 with an average rate of 53 M/sec.

Building a 4x400 Gig SATA Raid0 in a couple of weeks in an IBM server
box, will be interesting to see what speed I can get out of that.

Interesting that HDTach wasn't able to test my other Raid which is a
striped set of 3x72 Gig Seagate SCSIs. It saw each drive as an
individual drive ...
