XP Media Edition - editing out commercials

Can anyone suggest a program for encoding and editing video recorded by my
xp media edition m470n HP Media Center Desktop. I have tried Nero Burning
version 6 (demo version), some other programs I have tried don't recognize
the format Windows Media version records tv files in. Nero burning demo
version crashes on me when I try to edit out the commercials and create a
VCD. I tried tempgenc and when I tried to edit... it informed me files were
illegal format.. Is there some sort of plugin I need to work with XP media
edition?

I don't know if my editing problems are because the file is large 3 GB for
a one hour program.. Any help would be appreciated. I am a newbie to this..
this is my first attempt at editing video.
