newbie question re: recording video on pc

I am not looking to copy a DVD I am looking to play a DVD and "record"
a scene, which I can later import into my Movie Maker or Roxio
programs. I know with audio I can "rip" a song of a CD but when I have
a scenario where I can't do that I can at least copy/record a song. I
can play the song and use the small recorder program on the sound card
to copy it in real time. It creates a wav file which I convert. I
assumed the same can happen with video, and maybe it can, but I cant
figure out how?

I also have some small files like real player or quick time video
files which I cannot import into my movie maker or Roxio programs and
assume whatever answers the first part of this question might also
solve that particular dilema as well.
