Scandisk Error

I cannot use the Scandisk because everytime I try, I get the generic error message of "this program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down." When I click on the "Detail" button, I see this

SCANDSW caused a general protection fault in module DSKMAINT.DLL at 0008:000035e0

This is followed by columns of hexadecimal numbers.

The exact same error message is displayed whenever I try to Defrag except for Defrag, the word "SCANDSW" is replaced by "DEFRAG"

Should I reinstall Win98SE or a change in the Registry is warranted?

I would try and delete the file dskmaint.dll and then reinstall a new copy of dskmaint.dll in the windows/system folder....

I tried both. Didn't work. Reinstall 98SE. Everything is fine. Throw the baby out with the water, but if it works, it works.
