Monitor display is dark, particularly pictures. Nothing has changed.
Checked monitor settings and is set to brightest. Checked resolution. Where
else can the problem be? Thanks.

How old is the monitor? Over time, a monitor goes darker and darker. Just
a normal ageing process. I've had them go completely after two years and
then one will be eleven in September.

See if your video card has controls for that under Display
Settings/Properties
