color scheme

i open the control panel, choose desktop, then from the patterns and pictures
that come with windows i chose a patten. i then went to the color grid to
select a color that i wanted and applied it. however, instead of changing it
goes right back to the original color it was before. i'm almost certain that
i have changed the color on the pattern that i chose as a background once
before. i'm trying to get my personal settings as they once were before i had
to be re-formatted. am i crazy or what? just want to be sure that my p.c. is
working as it should. any help would be appreciated. thanks.
