Images screwed up when downloading to particular PC

Hi - I have recently started having a problem with downloading images from
my digital camera onto my PC. The camera is the Sony DSC-P120, and my PC is:
Win XP Home SP2
Asus A7V8X-X Motherboard w/4 USB 2.0 sockets
Athlon XP 1600+, 512MB Crucial PC2700 RAM....
....
When I download images from the camera through any of the 4 USB 2.0 sockets,
from either of my 2 memory cards, the images come out streaky, with large
horizontal bands of distorted colour and parts offset to the sides. A few
images aren't affected, but almost all are, and some cannot be drawn to the
screen at all! However I download them, whether opening them straight from
the memory card or after copying them to the hard drive, with whatever
program, it is always the same effect. The pictures get mangled in a
different way each time when I open them, but the actual stored images on
the memory card aren't damaged. The images look fine when I download them on
another computer, so it is not the camera at fault I don't think.

I have reinstalled the USB 2.0 drivers for my motherboard, and the drivers
for the camera, both with no effect. I am confused because I run a Logitech
cordless keyboard and mouse off one of the USB ports, and that works fine,
as did my camera until about two weeks ago. I can't understand what the
problem can possibly be!

Has anyone encountered this before? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Have you tried using all of the USB ports (i.e. is the problem only with one
port perhaps?). What you describe is what happens when a memory card goes
bad, but since it's only for one computer I don't know.

Joe,

You problem might be something with the camera, or computer, but I couldn't
resist telling you what I use to download without any problems so far.

I have never liked to download from a camera using wires. Using card
readers, you stand less of a chance of damaging a card or camera, and once
you start using them you will never go back to wire transfers.

I use two small triangular "Zio!s", and a Dazzler card reader. You need a
Zio for a CF card and a different one for a SM card if you cameras use both
types of cards.

The Ziol card reader is great for laptops while in the field. They are small
triangular devices that you can carry in the field an see your photos
instantly on a laptop..

The Dazzler is great for home computer use. Mine just stays connected
permanently to a USB and takes SM or CF cards

Epson has told me it is preferable to download to the USB 2.0 port on my PC,
even though they have a port on the printer
for inserting a memory chip which runs on USB 1.0. They claim the transfer is
faster if your camera has USB 2.0. I have
posted a query about this asking for anyone's experience downloading pictures
with USB 2.0 vs. USB 1.0.

As regards the query on this thread, was the same USB cable used on both
computers? You could have a damaged cable.
I assume you tested the transfer to the 'good' computer AFTER you found the
problem with the 'troubled' computer. If not,
go back and try the 'good' computer again to be sure nothing else has changed.
