Does Vegas 5 require some form of activation?

Yep, it'll ask you for the serial-# and then to register with sony.
I think you can avoid the latter step by telling it to register from
another computer (haven't tried though - what's wrong with
registering an honestly bought software ;-).

    Another consideration:

Sonic Foundry, and now Sony specifically allows the use of a single
copy of Vegas/DVDA on more than one computer. You are expected to
honor the intent to use only ONE so-equipped computer at any one time.
I have vegas 3 on 2 desktops and one laptop at home, and one desktop
at the office. I use the old Pentium Pro 333 at home for runing
tutorials and trying new ideas, but not for serious work. I have a
dual Xeon 2.4 ghz box which is set aside for nothing but video work.
The laptop was taken overseas on a Switzerland travel project, just in
case I needed to manipulate a short clip or two before sending it back
    to the New York website.

At the office, I have one of my own VAIO's because my employer would
not provide a suitable computer for small video projects, but wanted
me to do them. I could not put the software on my office computer, as
    it is networked.

All of these uses are one-at-a-time, and fully conform to the letter
and spirit of Sonic Foundry's/Sony's single use policy. Note,
however, that it was necessary to obtain "activation codes" for each
computer to gain full use, rather than "demo" operation.

This policy is not displayed directly, but can be found (as I recall)
under the FAQ's. If only others, particularly MIcrosoft would follow
    suite!
