Anyone have one of these working in a linux box? Also, I am currently using win2k pro on a gateway for my ICS setup, and the damn OS wants to do too much without my telling it to, so I wanna install linux in its place. I've never used masq before, is it hard to configure? I heard that it doesn't support some things, such as ICQ...will I at least be able to play quake and cs on the workstation (98se) box? And is it possible to make "network drives" like in NT/2k? :p

Dont trash your W2k setup just yet. Use a dual boot. Burning CD's in Linux can be done, but the programs available in Windows are far better than the ones available for Linux.

Setting up your linux box for a gateway is not too hard. I have not tried to do it this way but Mandrake 7.2 has a setup wizard for ICS much like windows. The only problems I've ever had is getting the DHCP to work with my cable modem. I eventually had to call the company to make my IP static.

There is a Linux ICQ client. I dont use ICQ for windows or Linux so I cant tell you if it works.
For info on IP masq go here http://ipmasq.cjb.net/

Here is a link for linux ICQ http://www.portup.com/~gyandl/icq/

Also when installing linux be careful on the packages you install. The good thing is you have 10x the control over the OS vs Windows. If your not careful linux will install alot of default daemons and some of these will be running without your knowledge.

If you take a truth and follow it blindly, it will become a Falsehood and you a Fanatic.

I'm curious...
Ok, I've never burned a CD under windows, and I've only done a few under Linux.

But GCombust and XCDRoast were so simple (once you have them set up right) that I have a hard time imagining how the windows program could be "far better".

Is this just my ignorance?
What is missing in the Linux programs?

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice.
In practice, there is.

For example I use Nero to burn CD's, convert mp3's into CD format, and I've actually converted mpeg's into SVCD/VCD format to watch on my DVD player. All this can be done by simply dragging and dropping the files. No worries no setups. If I want to make true 1:1 (copy protected) copies of a cd I use CloneCD.

I dont think they are difficult, in fact much of the functionality I just listed is on it's way. But it's still not there. For linux I use XCDRoast, but just for kicks.
