You must first synch via USB to set up a partnership; after this initial
synch you can thereafter synch wirelessly.

Are you trying to do this with both the PPC and the desktop in the same
network?, i.e. getting their addresses from the same router/DHCP server? If
so you shouldn't need to do any VPN stuff. Typically you need to tell the
PPC it is connected to a Work network, so that it handles internal IP
requests properly.
If you are trying to do this from outside your network you will need to
assure that there is some way for the PPC to be able to associate your
Partner PCs name with it's IP address. I think a hosts file will do that.
An alternate way is to set up a VPN, which then makes your PPC look like it
is on the same natwork.

In your Pocket PC's ActiveSync, just check if your PPC is set to synchronize
with the correct computer... you shouldn't ahve a problem with this if you
are synchronizing with only one PC...
Anyway, you should be able to initiate synchronization from the Pocket PC
itself.

For grins, go to Settings, Connections tab, Connections, Advanced tab,
bottom button (Select what your network card connects to [Network Card]. On
the drop down on the Configure Network Adapters page you should be on now,
try selecting 'Work', and see what happens.

Actually this did the trick too...
In Connections... Connect to Internet using [Work Settings] ...connect to a
private network should connect using [Work Settings]... Assuming that Work
Settings are completely empty... else, Create a new Setting called Wireless
and use this blank setting for both Internet and Work connections.
When the AP is detected choose Connect to Internet...
Now you can Surf and ActiveSync too... even at the same time...

It's not that hard actually. The way to do it is to create a tunnel
between your PPC and your home router and then you can sync however
don't expect much in the way of speed.
Check to see if your router/cable router supports PPTP VPN and then
you should be able to find a ton of info on setting up a PPC tunnel.
