Just got HL2 on DVD and on putting it into my machine the drive light just
stays on. I can put the disk in my linux box and I can see the files no
problem. Any suggestions as the game shop said "no returns" when I bought it
(though they did swap the disk).
I've a 2.8ghz processor with a Pioneer DVR 106 DVD R/RW ...

How's you internet connection?
I have ADSL with 512 download
Installed Steam
Browse games and chose "Register a product I already own"
Typed in the key and steam started downloading the content
I let the machine run over night and HL2 was ready to play the next day
Peace of cake :-)

I have a 4mb connection .. it's 2.4gb in via torrent. 20% left and I'm not
bothering to return to the shop, and no guilt either.

Why not do it the legal way via Steam then? You can then play online,
get patches and updates painlessly.

Had never heard of it before your post!
However, I have just bought the Half-Life2 DVD with Counter Strike source
for £14.95 (~$26) ... It's $49.95 on Steam ...

You can still use Steam if you had paid attention to my previous answer
instead of making spellchecking
Get the Steam client
Install the Steam client
When the Steam client is installed
Start the Steam client
And you can get the game with no xtra costs by using the CDKey which is
included with the HL2 DVD version you bought in the retail store
Choose Browse games and choose "Register a product I already own"
Typed in the CDkey and Steam will start downloading the latest content
for you
Really piece of cake and so much easier than messing around with the
DVD and unlocking files etc
You still need to get patches etc through Steam

I'll try again ... "Bacon".
Almost as funny as Tony Blair's French lesson. The kids said "We've just
learnt the French for hamster". Despite being fluent in French, he says
"What's that then?" Reply .. "Le hamster"

Thanks Peter. I'm amazed that it's that easy. I could have just walked into
the store, copied the code and walked out again.

Nope, CS:S doesn't work either. I've spoken to customer services. They've
asked me to email them. Still waiting for a reply ...

It's "røget snitte" or "røget flæsk" in danish
Bacon was introduced at some point to give those bloody foreigner a slight
chance when ordering pork in Denmark ;-)

After you have your retail "boxed" game installed, and registered to a steam
account, you can easily install the game on other machines via steam.
Find a friend with discs you can borrow, or ask a close friend with discs to
create an account with your key, or check your machine for programs that
Steam does not like. Perhaps the dealer would allow you to install the game
on one of their machines, just so you can create the account, then go home
and download the game from steam.
It took about a month for Vivendi to replace a bad CD#1 before I could play.
Steam would not let me register a new and valid retail key, and download the
game, without first installing from a retail CD. On the plus side, the
retail version can be sold without paying Valve to transfer an account.
