Subject sort of says it all. I'm not actually planning to recompress DV
video back to DV video, so I'm not really sure how relevant my concern
is. Here's what I know:
The MS DV codec is, or was, one of the worst, and at any rate is still
not the best. The "best" is either Canopus, Mainconcept, or,
occasionally, Sony, depending mainly on opinion, perception, and word-
of-mouth, although I read an impressively detailed shootout review of
the various codecs which rated MS at 1, Mainconcept at 3, and Sony and
Canopus both at 5. So, if I can get Premiere Pro to use only the Sony
or Canopus codec, I'll be happy.
Trouble is, I'm not finding where one selects which DV codec they want
to use for preview / render / encoding. Far be it for me to speculate
that the software doesn't permit such a function even in its very
latest incarnation, but if it's doable then it's not exactly obvious.
I know there's a workaround one can use to get the Mainconcept codec to
work. I'd be interested in hearing details on how to get something
like that going with the Sony / Canopus codec.
I should mention that I can indeed go to my project settings and
examine the video rendering tab, but all of the options on said tab are
greyed out.
Lastly, back to what I said about not having any desire to encode DV
video. My goal here is to ensure that the _decoding_ of my DV video is
of as high a quality as possible. I am only taking it for granted that
there will be differences in quality between the output of the various
DV codecs. This does seem like a safe assumption to me. I do expect
the differences would be practically undetectable, but the point is
that there's no fooling the MPEG2 codec. Garbage in, twice the garbage
out. Or worse. That's what I'm trying to circumvent.
