I've had the GL2 for about a year and a half, picked up a spare battery
at Walmart on a whim several months ago. The original Canon battery
still doing great. The Walmart battery pretty consistantly charges to
what is shown as fully charged but when I pop it into the camera it
shows it as about 50% - and it lasts as though it's not charged all the
way. Are there any tips or tricks to make this one work or is it a
tosser? If a tosser, are there any recommendations for lower priced
batteries than the original Canons?

Take it back to Wal-Mart for exchange or refund. That's the only reason I
buy there, no hassles when something does not work as advertised.
