Daisy Chaining via Firewire

Situation :
W2k fully patched Dell Latitude 1.8 P4 640MB RAM 20GB HDD
Sony Camcorder Firewire 4 pin connector & Dell Laptop 4 pin FW
capturing video no dropped frames.
New 160GB in External Hard Drive Case has 2 x 6pin FW ports
Thoughts :
Any issues with capturing video from camcorder to external HDD ?
I understand you can daisy chain 63 FW devices!
Any issues here with above scenario i.e.. plug Ext.. HDD to laptop and
Camcorder into Ext. HDD 2nd FW port or would I be better advised to
get additional FW ports via PCMCIA and plug both into laptop ?
I have Googled and found reports of problems with connecting via
4pin-6pin cables one reported the FW had been damaged on his Camcorder
is that likely ?
If this is viable what about Ext. DVD writer as well ?
Any thoughts or experiences ?
