Last November I purchased a HI-Val (I think it's relabaled iomega)
4x DVD+/- writer that came with Nero & Sonic MyDVD.
The drive uses default windows drivers,
no drivers to install or update.

I installed it in on my Compaq Presario
Win 98 - Pentimum II 450, 198 Meg

(I bought this and set it up for dv capture and
editing [miro dv300 & adobe premier LE] back in '98,
I know it's due to be replaced,
but that probably won't happen until next year.)

Nero has no problem wrting to the drive,
but MyDVD gives the following error when I try
to write a dvd:

"an invalid media type was specified (32772)"

I tried Sonic support & searched these groups
for answers & then opened a ticket with Sonic tech
support.

Sonic tech support has been useless, they respond,
but the responses just demonstrate that they don't
understand the problem, and aren't willing to admit
this is probably due to a bug or compatibility problem
with their software.
After having me update some adaptec drivers,
they haven't come up with any ideas that have any chance
of working.

Lately their responses just scream to me that they don't have
a clue, and are trying to ask me to do stupid things
just to get me to go away.
Typical response: try using different brand of blanks,
or unistall some software that wasn't even installed
when I started seeing the problem.

Last December I wanted to get a dvd put togeter,
so I tried the Ulead DVD Movie Factory trial,
it worked no problem. I have since tried
trial versions of other DVD sotware -
everthing but Sonic works.

I thought I'd ask here as I'm sure there are
people here that are much smarter than (and probably
know MyDvd software) better than the tech support
driod I'm dealing with at Sonic.

Any one have any idea how to make this error
go away, before I give up and buy some other software?

I've already wasted alot more time on this than
the "free" software was worth.

Any other recomendations for reasonably priced
DVD authoring software, that are compatible with win98
can take the dv avi files that Miro captures or Adobe renders &
turn them into DVDs?

Right now it looks like I'll go with UMF.

P.S. - I'm getting the Sonic tech support for free - but the support
I'm getting is worse than none at all. All they have done is wasted
my time & made it very unlikely that I'll buy anything Sonic in
the future. I would have been much happier with their service
if they offered no support for their OEM software, or just admitted
that they don't know what's wrong, and can't or are unwilling to help
me for free.

Have you upgraded to version 4.5? It was a free update for my version
4.0. I don't know if it would fix your problem, but since it is a
free update it might be worth a try. As I recall, you must open 4.0
and read the serial number or key code, whatever appears on the
opening splash screen....and it is written so small that my old eyes
had trouble reading it.

If you registered your original version, you should have gotten a ton
of emails from Sonic about updating....and of course, upgrading to
5.0, which initially was only for Windows XP users, but eventually
came out for Win 2000 also.

Double checked my version number it's 4.0.4.

Did you purchase your 4.0 retail or was it packaged with
a writer? (My copy was included with a hardware purchase).
I did get a ton of email from sonic after I registered,
but never noticed any offer of free upgrades,
I think they were all trying to sell me something.

I think I've figured a way around my problem though,
I can have MyDvd write the project to a VIDEO_TS folder on my
hard drive, then write it to disk with Nero.

I got mine with the purchase of a Sony DVD Burner shortly after they
became available. I don't remember how long ago, but I do remember
that I spent about $350...with no rebate, so it was very early in the
first Sony DVD burner run. I have been getting emails from Sonic ever
since.

I just went to the Sonic site, and they appear to no longer be
offering upgrades to version 4. I know I downloaded the 4.5 update,
but never used it, as I started using Vegas+DVD architect. I con't
find it on my hard drives, but I probably saved it either to a CD or a
data DVD, but so far I can't lay my hands on it. If you are a
registered MyDVD user, you might get them to either post it for you to
download or send you a copy. It may still be somewhere on their site,
but I couldn't find it.

Also, if you are registesred you might ask them to upgrade to version
5 at their special price which, as I recall, was about $50.

Good Luck

Just to add a little more info.....I found my copy of 4.5.2. I had
downloaded it in August of 2003, which explains why it is no longer
offered. Curiously, I discovered when I tried loading it up on one of
my personal computers which I have at my office, running Win 98SE,
(which does NOT have 4.0 loaded on it) that 4.5.2 loaded up just
fine(?)! The "upgrade" is actually a free-standing copy of 4.5.2,
which doesn't need an older copy to validate it.

The process which I went through with Sonic ws that I had to register
my copy of 4.0, then give them my email address, then they sent me a
log-in password by email. After that, I could use the password to get
to the download site.

While nosing around in Program Files under Sonic>MyDVD>Error
Strings>English, I found that, while they list hundreds of error
messages, error message 32772 was not among them!

Sonic is offering three different "upgrades" to MyDVD 5.3, ranging
from about $30 up to nearly $100, depending upon which bells and
whistles you want. However, there is one caveat...version 5.x will
only run on W2K or XP, so you would have to wait until you replace
your existing machine to run version 5.

Also, I tried to make some -R DVD's a few months ago (not with myDVD)
and destroyed about 3 -R DVD's on a Liteon DVD -+ Burner. I had just
about given up, when I decided to try an RW. Since the only empty RW
I had was a +RW, I gave it a try and it worked flawlessly. So then I
tried a +R disk, and it, also, did fine. I came to the conclusion
that the drive was haywire, and replaced it with that old Sony -+
Burner. The same brand -R's and -RW's work just fine with it, so in
my case, I am pretty sure that the problem was with the burner.

I have Vegas 4 + DVDA, which works great, even on my old and slow Dual
Pentium Pro 333 Mhz running Win 98 SE on just one processor, so that
could be another answer for you. However...another caveat...Vegas 5 +
DVDA only runs on W2K or XP, as I understand it, and only on faster
machines than 333 Mhz.

One other thing you might check...is there a firmware update for your
Burner which might solve the problem?

I have already told you more than I know about it, so if I told you
any more, I'd have to kill you ;-) Good Luck.
