I have a P4 1.8Ghz laptop with 1GB memory with mini firewire port (on
board I think) and a JVC GDDR53 (Aus) Digital Video camera

I am trying to capture video from camera to laptop and then burn to CD
or DVD to play on DVD player connected to a TV.

Problem: The capturing mode is very jerky/ghosting and when I
transcode to mpeg, AVI, VCD or DVD it is still not the same quality as
it is when I transfer from camera directly to a VHS recorder.

I have used the following apps and tested all formats in each with
still poor quality although I haven't played around with individual
settings in the apps themselves:
ULEAD DVD Moviefactory & Videostudio (trial versions)
Premiere Pro 6.5 Full version
Imagemixer 1.7 (came with camera)
Windows Movie Factory

My next theory is perhaps my firewire port is not up to scratch - is
this possible, I am prepared to buy a pcmcia firewire card but not
until I have fully determined this is the problem.

Or could this be a problem with firewire cable or worse still the
camera?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Catherine

Cath,
Do you think you are dropping frames?
Firewire has no loss of quality at all. However, one frequent problem
users have is that the computer, typically due to a misconfiguration, cannot
keep up with the flow of data from the camcorder. This results in frames, or
short sequences of frames, that are simply not on the computer.

If you decide that's the problem, there are many people here who would
be able to help.

Jerky motion on horizontal motion is indicitive of field order reversal.
This is not an issue of the camera, firewire, or captured file. It is an
issue of the mpeg encoder. You need to find a setting in the encoder that
designates the encoding order of the fields (top or bottom first). Just
reverse the selection. IIRC it should be bottom first.

I'm such a loser with computer stuff that after researching this, I
discovered that it is indeed possible that your firewire cable and/or
the connectors is defective. The easiest thing you can do is get another
cable and test to see if anything changes.

Firewire either works or it doesn't. Your problem is likely your hard
drive/system cannot keep up with the data flow. Turn off every background
application including: antivirus, taskbar clock, screen/power saver. Also
make sure you have sufficient hard drive space.
