After buying a bigger HD for my A/V box, I decided to re-install
everything from scratch instead of just cloning the old HD onto the
new one in order to start with a clean machine. Any Windows machine
running for long enough will accumulate a lot of cruft and whatnot,
you see... But ouch, I'd really forgotten how long it could take!
So essentially, everything is installed, from the OS (Windows 2KSP4,
DX9a, etc.) to my apps (Virtualdub, TMPgenC, Showshifter Pro 2.01,
iUVCR, etc.), but I am now facing two nagging issues that I'm not
sure how to solve.
(1) In Virtualdub 1.5.10, when I check to see what codecs are
available for compression in "capture AVI" mode, the DivX Pro 5.03
codec is not listed as an option. This is odd, as both Showshifter
and iUVCR do show it as a possible option for their own capture
function. What gives?
(2) More bugging is the existence of a codec called "0" (zero) listed
as one of the available video codecs in ShowShifter, VirtualDub and
iuVCR. I did not see it in the previous incarnation of my video box
(on the smaller HD), why would it appear on the new instance of Win2K?
And what is it?
Like I said, I can't believe I'm the first one to get these annoyances
and I prefer to call upon someone else's experience before I
experiment in an effort to solve it and maybe bork my install.
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.
/jds
p.s.: has anyone here upgraded from Showshifter 2.x to 3.x? Version
3.x of Showshifter has profile support for DiVX (pro) 5.1.1 and since
I did buy DivXPro5.1.1, I am wondering if this upgrade would it be
worth it.

Go to the Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers.
Select Video Codecs > Properties.
Then Properties again - the second tab on the Video Codecs Properties
window.
What do you see here?
Is your DivX codec listed as an installed (registered with OS) codec?
Is the phantom codec '0' listed here? - If so, select it then Properties,
can you now identify what codec '0' is?

Here is what I get when I do what you recommended (I had to type it
up, no cut-n-paste possible):
ATIYUV12.DLL
DivX 5.0 Codec
iccvid.dll
Indeo(r) video 5.10
ir32_32.dll
iyuv_32.dll
IYVU9_32.DLL
msh261.drv
msh263.drv
msrle32.dll
msvidc32.dll
msyuv.DLL
msyuv.dll <--- yes, a 2nd time, but with the extension in
l/c
PICVideo MJPEG Codec
XviD MPEG-4 Video Codec
So I do not see mystery video codec "0" (zero) there, though I see two
"msyuv" codecs. I do not see why I have two codecs with the same
name, as I did not do anything funky with my box. And DivX _is_
registered with the OS, so it should show up as an available codec
with Vdub.
Checking again with Vdub 1.5.10, I now realize that mystery codec zero
has a FourCC code of "iyuv" and is associated with this "iyuv_32.dll"
listed above, something I did not see before.
I just put in the older HD containing my A/V environment (I use
swappable HD caddies for different instances of Win2K depending on the
application) and I just checked what is available in Vdub 1.5.4 (what
I use with the old A/V instance). Surprise: DivX is missing there too
and I have a blank line as an available codec. FWIW, this one has a
FourCC of "iyuv" and is associated with "iyuv32.dll".
And as far as the registered codecs, the list is like above, but the
following codecs are missing:
ATIYUV12.DLL <----- possibly because I do not have the ATI MMC
installed in the old A/V instance.
IYVU9_32.DLL
msyuv.DLL <----- one of the two.
Oh, and as far as iUVCR is concerned, DivX *is* available with my old
A/V instance.
I am now starting to wonder: could there be a "known problem" between
Vdub 1.5.x and DivX 5.x? Somehow, this is all starting to sound
familiar, but I can't put my finger on it.
As far as Mystery Codec zero/blank is concerned, I now wonder what is
this "iyuv" thing is and if I should not simply remove the associated
DLL (iyuv32.dll).

After replying to you, I googled for "iyuv_32.dll" (the .DLL
associated with mystery codec "0"/Zero) and surprise, it says it is
"Intel Indeo(R) Video YUV R2.0, v. 2.0.0.0": why in God's name can't
"they" just add this description? Weirder, all references to it found
via Google seem to tie this .DLL with Win98/WinME. Is it kosher to
find it with Win2K SP4?

One possibility is that the Windows codec list you're looking at is for
Directshow, whereas VirtualDub uses the VfW version of the codecs.

msyuv.dll is not the name of a codec, but the file that does the
decoding, and that same file can decode 2 different codecs (a YUV and
a YUY one, I believe). In fact, it can be used in many instances, like
in the decoding process of DivX clips -which it does awfully, the
reason why I have gladly anihilated it in my system.

Yes. Even if it were registered only as a decoder, not an encoder. You
know what? I would rename the nasty msyuv.dll (just in case you may
want it again sometime), and re-install DivX codec -but that's me.
