I have a external Sony speaker that connects to my macbook and is powered through a USB connector. The USB cable is hardwired into the speaker. The cable has frayed just at the USB connector and it only works sporadically now. Is it possible to splice on a new USB connector? Any suggestions for a solution here?

Solution
It depends on the cable. If it is regular usb you could try cutting the end of another cable and twining or soldering the cables together. Also would recommend using some shrinkwrap if you have some.

it won't be a problem.
Pin 1 VCC (+5 V)
Pin 2 Data-
Pin 3 Data+
Pin 4 Ground

i do not think it would damage the speaker if you accidentally connect the 5v to data+/- it just won't work, same if you connect it to the ground.
