Hello:

I'm up against a deadline and need to take a clients Tiff logo, colored
graphic and type on a white background, and make the background
invisible, an alpha channel, so I can super the logo over video in
Premiere.

Have Photoshop but have not been able to accomplish this probably rather
simple task. Any detailed help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
George

1) Load the picture in Photoshop

2) Click on the "Background" layer (in the Layers palette)
with the right mouse button so that you will get to the
context menu. Select "Layer properties..." from the menu.
A dialog will pop up.

3) The dialog suggest a name "Layer 0". Accept it by pressing
OK. (The layer changes from a special, transparency-locked
background layer to an ordinary layer.)

4) Choose "Select" -> "Color range..." from the pull-down
menus at the top of the main window. A dialog will pop up.

5) Click on the colors in the picture, adjust the "Fuzziness"
slider. Once you are satisfied with the selection (which will
become an alpha channel in due time), click OK. (You should
now see the rough outlines of the selection displayed with
a "marching ants" style animated border.)

6) Press "Delete" on keyboard. (This will delete the selected
parts of the picture and replace them with a checquered
chessboard pattern which represents a transparent background.)

If you got it the wrong way, "Undo" changes, press Shift +
Ctrl + I (this reverses the selection) and press "Delete"
again. If you still feel it did not work out quite right,
step backward ("Edit" -> "Step backward" × n) and start over
by making a new selection.

(If you still feel you need to retouch the selection manually,
Google for tutorials on using the Quick Mask mode and/or the
Magic Wand.)

7) Once you are satisfied with it, save in Photoshop (PSD)
format, open Premiere, double-click on the Project window
(bin). Select the file you just saved and press OK.

8) A dialog will pop up and ask whether you want to "Merge
layers" or choose a particular layer. Choose the "Layer 0"
(the layer you just edited). Do not choose "Merge layers"
or the transparency will not work.

9) Drag and drop the imported still image from the Bin to
the Timeline.

Hello Jukka:

Thank you for your reply. I may be in trouble. I have only the lite (LE)
version of Photoshop 4.0 and I cannot find the dialog you mention as
Layer Properties under Background in the layers palette. Is it likely
this feature is removed from this version??

....sorry, my mistake. I do have a full version of Photoshop 6 on my other
computer in the office. OK, I now have the full Layers pallette but I see a
small padlock in the right corner for Background and everthing is greyed out
(?).

Go to the CHANNELS tab and add another channel.
