Actually, the only thing you need for site is a microphone and systems speakers. A headset would be better since if you don't position the speakers and microphone just right person on the other and we'll hear their own feedback.

If you want to use Skype for land-line calls then you have to buy credits.
I think what you're talking about is a phone to VOIP adapter . With one of these you can connect your regular home phone computer.

I use my regular 5.1 speakers & a cheap mike.... If your wearing a headset on the other end that way, that person can hear his own voice echo in his headset.... Some people don't like that to well.... So running that way is not the best, but it's not bad either..... I'm going to get a headset when I fine the Logitech USB one I'm looking for though.......

As far as the USB phone, I don't know.... [shrug]

They got them voice over phone things in New Egg but most reviews say there not any good . Hell I got mic's all over the place ha , ha . I just thought that USB phone thing would be neet . My boy is certified for installing that new Sysco voice over system ( been putting in quit a few ) , he will be here tomorrow and I'll ask him . ( shrug )

Mike, I have used Skype with individuals who use both headsets w/mics ... and those who use seperate mics and system speakers. And I have an opinion (a request actually).

Get the headset w/ built-in mic or the usb phone :!:

When I have talked with seperate mic/system speakers people, I get annoying feedback from their speakers that they don't hear. I hear my voice as I speak and again a partial second later as it returns thru their mic from their speakers. They don't hear this at their end for obvious reasons ... but I do, and find it difficult to have a decent conversation while trying to continue a thought while listening to what I just said. It's similar to the "stadium effect", for those of you who have ever done any PA announcing at a sports stadium (I did some half-time shows in college).

One other complaint about system speakers, you don't know who else is listening. While talking to RC and allowing the normal "choice" words to be scattered around the conversation, I suddenly heard his grandson in the mic ... wow, did he just hear me say **********, or ************ ... I think you get my drift.

If you just get a headset, that allows you to turn the speakers off during the "call" and maintain privacy. I highly recommended it. :D :D

I think I read the some company is making usb cordless phones for Skype. I think it would be cool 8) to be able to talk to someone half way around the world (FREE) using a cordless phone ... hell, you could go get beers while you were talking and not be tethered to the headset cord ... :D

I'm heading overseas in Jun of next year. IOT minimize phone costs I want to use Vonage/Skype/Whateva to talk over the internet. Do you know of a good site where I can read up on different options/costs? What about adding video, however crappy, to the mix. I'll be gone for one year, so maximizing contact at a minimal cost is really important.

Reply to Rugger

I don't know if Skype has video options (planned) or not ... I've heard bad things about vonage. Most IM programs allow you to voice chat and use a web cam, so yea, you can do what you want free. How about a web cam (thru an IM service, MSN, Yahoo, etc) and Skype for true phone type calling. The IM's are like walkie-talkies, push to talk, etc - Skype is just like a phone.

I've never tried combining both Skype with a web cam, so I'd suggest you try it out here 1st. :?:

Good idea!!!!!! I had enough trouble tracking down a USB headset around here..... I've finally found one place that I can get them & that's Best Buy... I looked all over & gave up... Came home & started calling around... It ended up BB is the only place I can get them... They're the same ones you have, so I know they're good....

I'm going to drive on over & get a set... I'll have to try them out when I get back.......

Reply to RCPilot

PM me when u get them ... I'll turn the skype thing on, and we'll talk! :D

Reply to Jake_Barnes

RC, let me know what headset you go for. I'm gonna get one too so I can start on this Skype stuff. Be interested in your findings.

Reply to RobD

I got this headset.... I didn't buy it from there, I got it locally... I wanted the USB because I didn't want to mess with my sound plugs when I wanted to use the headset.....

Reply to RCPilot

$50!?! 8O

And it'll mess my hair up. This is unacceptable. :x

Reply to dhlucke

Just surfed the Skype site - awesome! I kinda like the bling-bling of the Motorola wireless kit. $100, but nice to lose the tie to the PC when talking to the honey back home.

I did see that they want to add video, but they are very vague on implementation. That tells me it won't be anytime soon. I'm concerned about IM for anything. I've stayed away for security reasons and I don't haven't had a real reason to actually start using IM up to this point. [/shrug] Looks like I may have to make the jump if I want that capability....[/sigh] That means more research on how to make it secure and as hack-proof as possible.

Reply to Rugger

Here's some Bling-Bling that won't mess your hair up...

Reply to Rugger

That's pretty 8) no doubt!!!

Reply to RCPilot

I think people make IM sound scarier than it is most of the time. In all the years I've been using ICQ, MSN, Yahoo... I've never had a problem with being hacked. I use Trillian now to connect to all 4 of the big IM clients... and it's been smooth sailing.

How do string phones work?
To make a string phone, all you have to do is take two papers cups, put small holes on their bottoms and pass a piece of string through each. After you have done that take one paper cup and give the other to a friend. When you talk into the cup, your friend will be able to hear you loud and clear! Now, let's find out how these string phones work.

Besides through air, sound can also travel through other things. What's more, string can carry sound better than air because it is made out of solid matter. When sound gets carried through the air, it gets weaker, but if it is carried by a solid matter, its does not get weaker. If you want to make your string phone work better, try making the string really tight when you use it.

Here you go DH , and it won't mess up your hair .

Did you click thru my link?

Reply to Rugger

No I didn't but I did now ha , ha . Yep that's it and under $ 3.00 . Couldn't ask for anything else . ( unless you use a really longgggggg section of string , then it might be a tad over #3.00 ) .

Excellent. I went for a quick look in my lunch break and some punk-arsed kid at Dick Smith Electronics tried to sell me this $100 new-arsed fandangled pair with all the bells and whistles and I told him to scale the price tag right back because I dont want my shorts pulled down over the price. He begrudgingly showed me the $25 range. :)

I didnt see that Logitech pair but now I at least know what to hunt for.

Its Thursday night and the lads are heading out for a pint and I told them I was giving it a breather. There were 8O glances all round and then one of my mates slapped me on the back and called me the biggest bullshite artist in town.

They left over an hour ago shaking their heads in disbelief at my non-boozing and I'm stuck here doing a double shift.

Reply to BomberBill

It's good fun doing that. Hard work, but good fun.

Reply to RobD

And I bet that'll be the last time you turn down a pint too, right?

Reply to RobD

You bet your arse it will be! :D

In all seriousness though, its good to give the sauce a break from 2-3 nights a week back to one; at least, that is, until a great set of legs or a big set of jugs walks by and then I'll be the first one at the Boozer ordering a pint of the good stuff for me and a malibu, lemon and blueberry schnaps for her! :P

Malibu and pineapple for me please :?

Unlike Wingy, who's a girls drink lover. The bloody lightweight.

Yes, but I must say, I would enjoy - in fact, dare I say it, WE would all enjoy - getting amongst Wing's fine wine collection.

I'd wager a fortune that he's got a nicely aged Pinot there just waiting for my palate to enjoy!
