The Pinnacle tech support site recommends capturing at "DVD quality" to
prevent problems with out of sync audio.
What are the parameters of what's considered a DVD quality capture? It seems
somewhat confusing to me since anything that creates a larger file than the
DVD will hold will have to be compressed anyway.

If that's all the advice you got from them, then it's a BS answer that
doesn't answer anything, and it certainly doesn't help you.
I suppose the most common definition of DVD standard would be 720 x 480 (576
for PAL) at around 8000kbits/sec with 48khz audio, but I doubt that's any
help to you either.

I'm at the stage of sorting out the big picture, so any information is good.
This DC10-plus doesn't even give the option of recording at that data rate,
as far as I can tell, it tops out at 6000 kb/sec.
It's not advice they gave me as such, but it seems to be the only statement
to be found anywhere on their site regarding this issue in their knowledge
base. As it happens, the "out of sync" problem I'm having isn't even with a
DVD. The DVD came out fine using the same source files, the problem I'm
having is outputting to VHS video tape. If you have any input on this issue,
see my other thread "Strange out of sync problem when transitions used".

If your original capture is in sync, then there's nothing to be done
about the capture process to make things better.
You input "good" video into Pinnacle Studio and get out "bad" video.
Any guess as to where the problem lies?

I am not too familar with Pinnacle's software. The only thing I could
imagine off the top of my head is that if the project frame rate is set to
30, and you are using 29.97 fps in your source. That still wouldn't account
for 4 minutes, though. What about audio? Could the project be 48khz with a
44.1khz source, or the other way around, causing it to play at the wrong
speed when rendered?

DVD is mpeg-2, with a maximum video bitrate which, in practice,
revolves around 8000-8500 kbps.
DC-10+ captures MJpeg encoded AVI files, which are very different from
mpeg, and the bitrates cannot be compared.
Now, surprise: in fact, DC10 captures at a higher bitrate than the
best DVD bitrate, because it's not 6000 kbps, but 6000 KBps -that's
kilobytes, whereas mpeg-2 bitrate is usually measured in kilobits. In
other words, DC10+ captures at about 6 Mbytes/sec, whereas DVD is
restricted to barely above 1 Mbyte/sec (including
video+audio+subpicture). But, as said, those bitrates are not
comparable in a simple form (namely, because mpeg uses inter-frames
compression, which is not available for Mjpeg).
