Encoded video from WME and RealProducer too dark

Videos I produce using Windows Media Encoder 9 and RealProducer are much
darker than the source file (uncompressed or HuffyUV .avi files). The
odd thing is that in the encoder windows on my computer, the 'output'
video looks brighter than the source! I've confirmed on other computers
that the encoded videos are definitely darker.

On my computer, when I play back the .wmv and .rm files, sometimes they
are nicely bright, and sometimes they are dark, seemingly at random! I
suspect my video card, and in fact if I disable all acceleration under
the Display control panel, the output window in the encoder no longer
looks brighter. However the resulting encoded videos are still too dark
on other computers.

Is it possible that a bug in my video adapter driver is affecting the
encoders' brightness settings? I wouldn't think the encoders would use
my video driver at all; just the system drivers and maybe DirectX?

(Nvidia GEForce 4 MX 420, 64 MB ram, WinXP Pro SP1, Dell Dimension 8200
2.5ghz P4.)

Where would I find these gamma settings? I've searched WME high and low and
can't find any. There are settings for video brightness in the Windows Media
Player but that's no solution.
