hi, i'm thinking of buying an external hard drive to store video files
and there are so many possible brands that i need you guys to help me
out.
your two cents please on what brands are recommended (maybe it doesn't
matter?), specific models if you like, and even what places offer the
best deals. (i'm thinking about 200GB)

200 GB. Western Digital Caviar SE.
Put it in an ADS Dual Link USB 2.0 / Firewire Drive Enclosure and you're all
set.

That's a great idea. I think I'll get an external drive.
But what do you mean by an "enclosure?"

A case/cover that holds an internal IDE drive. The ADS I mentioned has
both USB & firewire cpanility but also comes in either format only. Info on
the dual option model is at
http://www.adstech.com/products/DL [...] pid=DLX185

I use five Maxtor One Touch 200 and 250Gb size drives for daily video
editing and they work great.

Hi Mike -
Is an internal drive in an enclosure better than a regular external hard
drive?
I'm looking at the specs for the Western Digital external drives. They say
Maximun transfer rates are 400Mbits/s for Firewire and 480 for USB 2.0. I
thought Firewire is faster then USB. Is there something I'm not
understanding?
Thanks, Allen

Hi Again Mike -
You recommend Western Digital. In my area, Maxtor is more readily available.
How does Maxtor compare?
Thanks, Allen

An internal drive in an enclosure IS an external drive...

That was USB 1.x, about 12 Mbits/sec, IIRC, but even if I don't recall
exactly, I'm close

USB 1.1 was slower than Firewire. USB 2 is comparable.
Unless you need portability, there's no advantage in using an
external drive. Connecting through the extra layer of Firewire or USB
isn't going to be faster, is it ?

Allen, I generally but my drives online as I find the local stores far too
expensive. Look at places such as www.newegg.com for good prices & service.
I have no opinions on Maxtor as I've never used them.

I'm not looking for the fastest way.
I want to use the external drive to hold hard drive backups and to store my
digital images (over 2000 and counting) and movie clips. There have been
discussions on the newsgroups about long-long-term storage and questions
about how CDs and DVDs might last in those plastic sleeves.
