In IE I was able to watch a video preview played on Real Player. I copied it to
my desktop. It had an odd exentsion...Windows Media Audio/Video. When i tried
to watch it off line in Media player, it says it does not recognize format. I
also tried with Printkey ( it captures stills ). When i opened it, the screen
was completely blank. I did give it a JPG exentsion. Does anyone know how I
could view this other than real player and also make some stills from it?
Irfanview would not do this.

You probably didn't copy the file, you copied a link to the video file. I've
found it virtually impossible to copy Real Video files that the creators don't
want you to copy. So you have to be connected to the Internet to watch the file.

I said that I did copy it and I can view it still , but only in Real Player.
Also I can watch it off line..proves that I did copy it.

Real formats are proprietary. It should not be any surprise that
only Real viewers can read/play them. This is the way Real
Networks wants it.

And that's why many of us will never allow any Real software on
our machines. Anything available in only that format, I don't need.

You can view it with Media Player Classic (a free player able to play
all video formats and especially Real Player format without Real Player
commercial interaction) or with VLC from Videolan ( another free player).

What was the actual extension, .ra, .ram? If so, these are Real formats. Maybe
Google the extensions themselves and see what else can handle .ra, .ram, etc.

Yes, I should have clarified that officially, only Real Networks
applications can play Real formats. There appear to be several
unofficial, grass-roots alternatives for decoding Real formats.
For example, there is no conventional Real codec that any old
player (WMP, etc.) can use.

The "real alternative" mentioned above is a Real codec for Windows Media
Player. Works very well too.
