Hey all,

I want to watch movies the are encoded in PAL on my system. My
dvd player has an option to decode PAL in the setup, but when I watch
the movies I have in PAL the screen is stretched. So I'm thinking its
the television I have. I'm from Canada and our broadcasts are in NTSC,
so I think my TV would be too. Are they selling TVs that are PAL
compatible these days ? No big deal, but any comments appreciated.

You did not mention the brand/model of DVD player, or the type of discs
you are watching.

Some players that can convert PAL to NTSC use a video chipset that has
problems with anamorphic ("enhanced for widescreen televisions") discs.

They cannot convert PAL-->NTSC _and_ downconvert widescreen to 4:3

***AT THE SAME TIME***

So you get a NTSC image which is too tall, because it is still
in 16:9 mode and the player can't crunch it any further.

Yes. But, to tell the truth, I've only seen multi-system sets over here in
Europe.

Mailorder should do it, though, if there are none in Canada. :)

Anyway, that's what life is, just one learning
experience after another, and when you're through
with all the learning experiences you graduate and
what you get for a diploma is, you die.

Thanks Mike :
The player is a Toshiba SD 2800 ,the disk in particular isn't
widescreen , it's a DVD-R , and when I watched it it was distorted like
that. I'm starting to think it may be the player though. It's not
playing my MP3's any more for some strange reason. Time to take it in
and exchange it because my warranty is still good,.
