Hey guys, I've been pondering the idea of running Linux on my system, and I finally decided to go ahead and buy RedHat 7.0 (cause I have a 56k and I don't feel like spending 30 days to download it). Anyway, I was wondering if you guys know some good Linux websites? Mostly for performance tips & the basics...

Let www.redhat.com be your bible. Web support for their produts is great.

I would stay away from RedHat 7.0! Not only do RH's x.0 releases have a history of trouble, but this one is even based off of a developent compiler and C library. This means chances for software incompatability/instability is high. Mandrake is generaly known to be good for beginers and I've had good luck with RH 6.2 if you can find it anywhere. I've found a good Linux portal to be http://www.yolinux.com/

If you are a brave beginner, by all means check out my sig. You will find friendly help in the irc chan and mailing lists if U try that out.

yeah, i may have to go with the guy about not using the red hat. they just came out with the new kernel so why not use that? i downloaded mandrake 7.2 (newest version) recently using Gozilla. If you don't know what that is, it helps you resume inturrupted downloads, it took me around 2.5 days (28.8 connection) to download the 650 meg iso file(you need a cdr drive) but it was well worth it. Also there is a feature that lets you install it to a windows partition, which means you don't have to mess with partitioning your harddrive. Since you are new to linux (so am I) this may be very helpful for you, i choose not to use this feature since i've done lots of partitioning in linux before and have no problem with it.

also....try linuxnewbie.org
