VPN on a LAN with XP Home?

I have a lan with several XP Home machines. If I have one computer with
files that I want to share, but still limit access to one specific machine,
can I turn on the firewall on the machine with the shared folders and set up
a VPN connection between the 2 machines? Is that a workable approch??
I have tried this, and I get the VPN connection to connect, but I can not
see any files on the shared machine. The share works well with the firewall
turned off.
