VCDs and Nero, "chapters" or something possible?

I've burned quite a few VCDs successfully at this point. But I keep
running into the need every once in a while to separate what one can
push the next button for which is different from what would appear on
the menu. i.e., a menu would ideal have only 2 items listed on it,
yet with a total of 7 "chapters" one could skip to.

It seems to me, though I'm not 100% sure of this yet as still a
newbie, that one burns individual tracks onto the CD-R and that that
is what Nero detects and puts in the menu. In other words, if one had
these 2 vids with 7 chapters, was being 3 "chapters" long and other 4
"chapters", the menu would show 7 items rather than just 2 with Nero.
Is there a way around this?

I can live with this, if not. What I've done in these cases is not to
put a menu at all. It means a bit of a workaround as I then can't
burn the the mpg files directly but usu. have to add some sort of
title pg so that each time I press the next button, I know what the
upcoming section is. So in essence, there is no menu for this VCD but
each segment has a fade in and fade out to a title page with "Warmup
stretches", "Workout", "Cooldown" titles, etc., etc., since I can't
seem to have just a menu with "Workout 1" and "Workout 2" on it since
all 7 segments show up. In order to have that just 2 show up in Nero,
the 2 workouts have to be 2 continuous files instead of 7, as it
stands now. So this means no way to easily get to next portion of the
VCD.

Anyway, I'll either get a yes or a no as to being able to do this and
yes, I know having a DVD burner would give me that capability but
that's a long way off. Once I can afford one, I will get one.
However, in the meantime, hope there's a way to do this with VCDs.

Thanks!

I've found that menuing on DVD is handled so differently by different
players that it makes little sense to use it. One player will ignore the
menu entirely, another will implement it as intended, a third will show
the menu but only begin play at the start of the disc, a fourth shows a
sequence of menus where only one was created - and then will not play at
all if one goes beyond the first level.

Okay. That's menuing for DVDs. Do I assume same holds true for VCDs,
which is format I'm talking about here? I'm not looking to make
anything complicated and the menus all work find on the DVDs I've
made, it's just in the odd case where it would be such a lifesaver to
have chapters or something yet only the main programs listed and not
all the components.

Sorry - my error. The menuing on DVD is handled consistently; I meant to
say that the problem is with VCD menus.

This should do:
http://www.geocities.com/medinotes/vcd/vcdimager_tools_gui.html,
though it can mean much more work.

Are you kidding? I never found a menu that worked differently than
intended.

What is the difference between a DVD and a VCD besides the obvious that one
is a CD? I have a DVD recorder to record old family VHS tapes onto DVD.

How do you make a VCD? What do you play it on?

I'm sorry, it's still a bit clear as mud to me <g>. I guess I'm still
wondering, no way to make chapters at all, then, in VCDs?

Thanks, I'll look into it!

And, p.s., didn't think it wouldn't take a lot more work <g>. That's
okay. If this can be done, I'll do what it takes. Thankfully, most
VCD menus I need are simple, it's just for the odd one that I need
"chapters" but without listing all those chapters in the menu.

Thanks.

It's easy to make the chapters in VCD, but playback is inconsistent from
drive to drive.
