Hello,
I am trying to set up a remote desktop session to my home
compter and have a question. If my computer is connected
to the internet, will I need to connect to a VPN server
first, before I am able to get connected to my home
computer? Or will I be able to use the Remote Desktop
client and connect directly to my computer's IP address?

Andy,
You will not need a VPN connection if your IP is a "public" IP which is anything other than (10. 172 .192). If your IP starts with anything other than the IP's I listed you should not have any problem as long as you set your home computer to accept Remote Desktop Connections, and you are apart of the Admin or Rem Desk Group.
Hope this helps!

Andy,
In addition to what Sean says, if you're behind a router, you will also need
a port forwarding fule (tcp port 3389) to the internal ip address of the
physical box. If you're not behind a router, then no other options are
necessary. Just make sure that the 'terminal services' service are in fact
running. Also, it's assumed that you're running XP Pro- because RDP isn't
available on XP home.
