here's the situation. i'm sure someone can suggest an easy solution
for this. i have a sony set top dvd recorder. i want to preserve some
rare laserdiscs that i have. problem with the recorder is it does not
allow manual chapter inserts during play or record. my plan was to
record the disc with no chapters, then extract the video with ulead
movie factory on my pc. when i did that i saw the video was split into
1 gb sections. i would have to merge them together in tmpge, which i
have done before. problem is the recordings are in dolby digital and
these programs do not handle that. ok, so i was going to demultiplex
the audio and video and work from there. i can do it with the first
extracted file but the rest respond as 'illegal stream. not and mpg
file'. they are mpg files. i also tried just copying the vob files to
the desktop. same problem.
basically what i want to do it take the video from the dvd, go into
ulead, or some other such program, and add the chapters where they are
required. there's gotta be a simple way of doing this with the dvd i
made on my sony recorder. any suggestions very appreciated. and
please, no suggestions of getting an mpeg 2 capture card and recording
to my hard drive. i just want to record from the tv setup, transfer
the video to the pc and add chapters without it being open heart
surgery. thanks in advance.

You could try just using TMPGEnc DVD Author it can rip the
video from VIDEO_TS folders or DVD_RTAV folders of a DVD
and if you un-check the Copy Chapter data box, you can add the
chapter points yourself. Be sure to have TDA copy the video data
to the hard drive, it's not only much faster that way, but gives you a
folder with the actual .mpg from the DVD. If for some reason that
doesn't work, use DVDShrink to rip the DVD to the hard drive in a
VIDEO_TS folder.

TMPGEnc DVD Author can process the Dolby Digital 5.1 or whatever
but you won't hear the sound while you are authoring/editing. Just be
sure it is listed properly on the "Clip information" page's "Audio settings"
area. Also make sure the "Re-encode the audio using the output format
of the track" box is un-checked.

Luck;
Ken

Scott,
Believe it or not I was able to do what you want with Ulead DVD Movie
Factory 3
Disc Creator, it will allow you to do what you want right on the disc, and
the disc creator version has Dolby digital ac3 support, you can even change
the backdrop to something nicer.

Try the trial but it won't do ac3 and will convert the audio.
