OK, I got my new Sony HC40 camcorder and the software that came with it
won't capture direct to the hard drive. The software guy said that it can
only copy direct to a VCD burner. What do I need to direct copy the tape
contents from the camcorder to the hard drive? Once on the drive, I have
Sonic MyDVD and Nero to burn onto DVD. I am running Windows Me. Thanks,
Sam K.

You will need to give a more detailed description of what
happened or nobody will be able to help you.

How are you connecting the camcorder? (USB/ Firewire)
Does ME recognize the camcorder when you plug it in?
What software are you using? (exactly)
Does that software claim to be able to capture DV to disk?

Define "software guy"? Where did you find this person?
What do you think qualifies him to give you a proper answer?

You need:
* a suitable connection (almost certainly Firewire)
* drivers to talk to the camcorder (maybe built-in to the OS)
* a capture application software that transfers DV via
Firewire to hard drive (like Scenalyzer)

Once on the drive, I have

Is it Sonic MyDVD that you are trying to use? It may very
well only support direct DVD writing as it is kind of a low-
end crippleware.

The HC40 has a USB & Firewire connection. In order to capture video into
your PC you will need a firewire card or connection on your PC. Most of
these cards come with some capture software. You will need to bring those
captured files into MyDVD. The only thing you may be missing now is an app
to capture your video over firewire as DV.
