When I shoot in widescreen 16:9, I can edit in that mode, and save to my
hard drive, and play it back on my computer, I get 16:9, but when I save it
to tape and play it back, it is 4:3 andsqueezed and on a regular TV.

What you are experiencing is pixel ratio. The D1/DV NTSC has a pixel is 0.9
and the D1/DV NTSC Widescreen pixel is 1.2. In both cases the frame
resolution is 720x480. If your television has a widescreen function then the
display will be 16:9, otherwise your TV displays the normal 0.9 native which
gives the picture the "squished" look. DVD players have a function that
reads this before going to a normal television, usually an inner setting for
"Normal 4:3 Letterbox". I can't remember if the XL2 has such an internal
setting which playsback the recorded 16:9 to a television without the
"squish". Playback a native tape from the camera to see what you get. The
computer shows you the right thing because that's what you picked in the
editing software settings. If you playback the file using Media Player the
picture will most likely look the same a your television display does.

When I play the widescreen avi that I shot in that format and edited in
premiere and play it back on the XL2 viewfinder, I get the letter box like
it suppose to be, but when I play that on a regular TV it looks squeezed. I
do have a TV that has 16:9 option and that plays goood, but I want to be
able to play what is on any TV with 16:9 format letter boxed, but I
can't.... I just got the XL2, so I have to experiment more. The manual is
not very detailed on how to do the letterbox on a normal TV

I want to be able to copy a 16:9 edited video to a VHS tape so that regular
TV can view it. I will try to do a DVD to see if I get the letterbox format
16:9 to view on regualar TV. I have a very early verison of DVDit, so I
doubt that I will be able to do it without getting a newer version.

Then my assumption was right. The XL2 has a chip which controls the 16:9
output to 4:3 display, which is the same as a DVD players' "normal 4:3
letterbox" function. Your only means of gaining 16:9 playback on a regular
TV is to go to DVD using 16:9. At that point the DVD player functions will
take care of the rest.
