Does anyone here have a Replay TV box? I'm wondering what codec it uses
to record and if anyone has hacked it to use guide info from a source
other than Reply.

Try alt.video.ptv.replaytv

I haven't looked there in a long while, but I recall that issue coming
up - however I no longer remember what was or wasn't possible...

You might also look into alt.video.ptv.tivo just for fun or comparison.

Chris, These are cheap PVR's because they make their money from the
subscription fee's.
Hacking them to use someone else's guide info, is nothing less than theft.
So just break into your local best buy and rob an expensive dvr, it amounts
to the same thing.

with as I please.

But the imbedded software is not yours to do with as you please, any more than
the copy of Windows that may come with a computer you buy.

Did you miss the part where I asked how to get rid of it? Did replay TV
start offering service in Canada when I was out?

Note this: as I understand it, if the original owner of a used
ReplayTV bought a lifetime subscription, the used box still has that
subscription. The subscription is attached to the unit (via a serial
number chip on the motherboard), not to the owner.

So you could buy the box at an estate sale :)

Of course, I meant the ReplayTV box, not the coffin (did I just say
that?).

I think the same is true of TiVo as well.

Well the cost of the service is quite reasonable and it has better
features than Tivo, so if they had a subscription that worked with my
satellite service in Canada I would pay for it before I would try
hacking it. Since they have no plan to do that... The thing that
really caught my eye is the ReplayTV sharing service, Poopli. Much more
efficient than trading things back and forth on bittorrent sites. But
now that I look at it, any hacking I would have to do in order to use
the box will probably break compatibility with that site.
