Panasonic PV-GS400 alternatives?

Yes, I have been one of the lucky, lucky, lucky souls hit with the
"cat purring", "8mm movie projector" tape transport issue on the
Panasonic PV-GS400.

Fortunately my case is not QUITE as bad as some of the sample files I
have heard posted about, but it is very noticable on high-end
speakers. I sent it off to the repair center in IL. Hopefully they
will have a fix.

So ... now that we have time to contemplate ...

Does anyone have any suggestions on alternate units in the same
general price/size range?

For instance, the 3CCD arrangement is really great for outdoors, but
it does struggle a bit indoors. Does anyone know of a comprable unit
that does a little better job in typical indoor lighting conditions?
