TMPG recoding problem

I have captured various files - VHS to AVI files - approx 14Gig to 30 Gig
in size - I am then trying to recode these using TMPG (into MPG2 files for
burning to a DVD) - eveything seems to go fine until TMPG gets to the last
4 - 7 seconds of the coding then it stops responding (according to windows)
- when I look at the file it has produced it seems to play in WMP but
cannot be loaded by TMPG Author (for turning into VOB's) - just hangs -
Virtual Dub just halts with an error when I try to open the file - the
converted files are around 3 - 4 gig.

Is there someway of cutting the ends off these damaged files ? Nothing
seems to want to open them - the most annoying thing is obviously that to
do the recodes is taking between 4 and 9 hours a time.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Assuming that there is nothing wrong with your install of
TMPGEnc (Which one by the way? the free one, 2.5, 3.0?)
then the fault must be either in the AVI or the settings you
are using. To provide any real assistance we would need
to have a detailed description of both.

Luck;

I would also add the less known fcchandler's VirtualDub-mpeg2, which
can at times open mpeg-2 files which VirtualDubMod, for some unknown
reason, does not.
