Not too long ago, I upgraded my motherboard, processor, and OS (from Win2K to
WinXP). During the last few days, I've been trying to pull some footage off
of my MiniDV camcorder, and I can't get my system to recognize that it
exists. I seem to remember that in Win2K, it was essentially as simple as
"plug in the device and run a video capture program."

No dice, here.

I'm using an A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard, which has built-in Firewire. When
that didn't seem to work, I plugged in the Firewire PC card that I was using
with my previous setup (basic Pinnacle firewire card bundled with Pinnacle
Studio DV - I'd try installing that software, but I haven't unearthed the
disc lately). Much to my surprise, the result was the same.

I've tried a few different programs, but the no-brainer software should be
Windows Movie Maker, which comes with WinXP. When I load it up, and have my
camera on VTR mode, connected to any of my firewire ports, I'm told that no
video capture device was detected. Same error in the other programs I've
tried.

What am I doing wrong? Is it possible that the camcorder's Firewire port
simply died since I last used it? I've never had any indications of problems
with it (or any other aspect of the camcorder, except for its finicky power
plug that pretty much prevents me from using the AC adaptor for anything but
recharging the battery or using the camera as a VCR with remote).

This may be a dumb question, but what the hey! Have you selected the
firewire device as your capture input? Or are you just opening the capture
program and clicking record? Check that your editing settings and capture
settings are correct. The capture program may be looking for an analog
input.

It couldn't find any firewire devide to select.

I managed to solve the problem, though, just a few seconds ago. I tried
reconnecting the plugs a number of times, which had no great effect. The
last time, I unplugged them, blew on the connectors, and plugged them back
in. Windows immediately found the device.

The connectors didn't appear dusty, but as I said, it's been quite awhile
since I've transferred any footage to my PC (I've probably filled ten tapes
since the last time I connected the camcorder to my PC). It's entirely
possible that some dust or something was killing the connection.

Problem solved! :)

Glad to hear it. Better pick up some compressed air it's better than blowing
on things and it contains less spittle! Happy editing.

But maybe spittle was the key, turning the dust into a conductive medium... :-)

I've got a few cans of it lying around, but for whatever reason, I didn't
grab it this time around.
