Causes and symptoms
Sometimes Windows 7 might show ‘The copy of Windows is not genuine’ message after a restart and the desktop might blank and the message will be displayed at the bottom right corner. System properties might say ‘You must activate today, Activate Windows now’. Reason for this error is problem with permissions in some registry keys. The Network Service account must have full control and read permissions over HKU\S-1-5-20 registry key. Two methods to resolve this issue is either disabling the policy setting or editing the permissions to provide the required permissions.

Disabling the policy setting
If Windows7 shows error message even after activation, you can resolve it by disabling the plug and play policy. To do this, go to start, run and type rsop.msc and click enter. Then go to computer configuration/ policies / Windows settings /security settings / system services /. Then disable the group policy settings and try to reapply the group policy. After this the computer might ask you for a restart. This will fix almost all issues related to this. If you are not aware of the process, it is better to contact Microsoft to fix this issue.

Providing required permission
Another method to fix the Windows 7 Genuine issue is editing and providing the permission for the group policy. You can open the group policy using the method shown above and this time click edit security button and click on advanced. In the allow section provide the permission for Query template, Query status, Enumerate dependents, Interrogate, User-defined control, Read permissions etc. Verify whether all the permissions are applied properly and restart the computer.

Ahh licensing, God bless you Microsoft :) How many licenses were purchased with the copy of 7 that you are using? If you are using it, and someone else from the company has the same copy, installed it and regged it, likely their machine is popping the same issue...or as stated, it was simply pirated from the beginning, however if the issue just started I'd say someone else from the folded company is trying to use it and microsoft is saying no.
