I have a problem that has me pulling my hair out! I'm in the process of
converting some very old (20 years) VHS home movies to DV. I've done this in
the past with a Canopus ADVC 100 and had no problems. I eventually sold the
Canopus because I bought a new Sony HC-40 MiniDV camera that has the AV/DV
conversion capability. I recently tried using the camera to start converting
more VHS tapes and that's where the problem lies. It captures great video
and I get the audio, but there is a constant popping noise throughout each
capture. I'm using Pinnacle v9.3 to capture but I get the same noise if I
use Windows Movie Maker or others. I've also tried a different VCR for the
playback and I still get the noise. Here's the real kicker .. I went ahead
and bought another Canopus ADVC 100. It arrived today and I STILL have the
noise problem. I never had this problem with the other Canopus on my older
computer. Could the problem be somewhere in the computer? I'm running my own
clone. It's a Pentium 4 (3.2 ghz) on an Asus P4P800 motherboard with 1Gb of
RAM and I'm using XP Pro. Here's another kicker .. when I try converting any
part of a commerical VHS movie, the sound is perfect! Also, I can hear the
sound as its going through the camera and there is no popping sound .. it's
only when I play back the captured video that I get the noise. I've posted
this problem once recently and I appreciate the help that some have offered,
but I thought I would try again to see if there was anyone else that has
ever ran across this problem.

I do not have a direct solution but maybe a workaround, Capture the sound
seperatly in an audio program and then drop that sound file preferably
changed to a wav file on the sound track of your NLE and delete the original
captured sound track. It is assumed that the original output from VHS to TV
does not have popping.
I use Pinnacle Studio 8.12.2 and luckily am popping free.
