UPnP router and VPN

Hey folks,

Because I haven't solved an issue with RD using a port other than 3389,
I have decided to use an incoming VPN connection instead. I have a Linksys
WRT54G router with port 1723 forwarded to an XP Pro SP2 server behind the
router. I also make use of UPnP for voice/video/file transfer with MSN
Messenger on this machine. It seems that a successful VPN connection breaks
UPnP in that the Internet Gateway icon on the VPN server's Network
Connections disappears. Consequently, voice/video/file transfers via MSN
Messenger do not work. It's not until the Incoming Connections is deleted
that the Internet Gateway icon magically reappears and MSN Messenger works
once again. Anyone else notice this or know if there's a fix?

That's pretty interesting. I've not noticed this sort of behavior, and I
don't have a place to test it at the moment.

This could well be Linksys specific, so posting in a Linksys forum--perhaps
at www.dslreports.com?? might be useful.

Which firmware version are you using? (and are you using the standard
Linksys firmware or one of the others - Sveasoft, Wifibox)? Try
updating the firmware to the latest non-beta version available.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have the latest available Linksys firmware
for this router. I have noticed this behavior with another Linksys router,
the BEFW11S4 ver 2 as well as a Netgear router I once had (sorry, don't
remember the model number). I just tried removing the router from the chain
and the same behavior is evident. Thinking this might be my machine, I
set-up a VPN on another UPnP-enabled PC in my network and the same behavior
was immediately apparent with an incoming VPN connection breaking UPnP.

Is there a conflict between the IP sub-net at the other end of the VPN and
the 192.168.1.xxx sub-net for the router?

No, I am using 192.168.2.XXX for the router and the other end is
129.128.XXX.XXX.
