LAN PC

All,

Does anybody know a simple method to use another one PC working on the same
LAN? I'm using WinXPPro on my machine and this "another" PC is using
Win2000Pro. So I can't install and activate the Terminal Services and VPN
connection because I don't have a Windows Server version and all required
Licenses. From the other side I can use VNC for free (www.realvnc.com) to do
something, to start some long process on the second PC, etc. The
disadvantage of this method is - when somebody works on this PC, for example
my wife, I can't use VNC for that, because it simply shares one desktop of
the host machine. Another one significant reason - my wife uses a different
permission level and I should use another login to the system to see all
protected directories and work with them. Finally I don't want to show
anybody what I'm doing on this PC, I just want to work at the same time on
the different desktop and do something different, like camcoder movie
compression, etc. If there some simple way to connect to another machine on
LAN with my permission level and start/control processes and applications on
it? It would be very nice keeping in mind the hardware parameters of this
machine - IP 3.6 HT (up to 3.9) / 2 Gb RAM / huge drive space, etc.

Any advice would be very appreciated.

Just D.

To do what you want, you really need a Windows server version--either 2000
or 2003.

There is a third-party alternative which runs under XP that has been cited
here sometimes--but it isn't cheap:

There are a number of products here, and I'm not clear just which of them is
needed to get the functionality you are looking for, though.
