My apologies in advance to anyone reading this twice- I posted this to
rec.video.dvd.tech yesterday, and today decided to post here,
since this group has helped a lot with my past problems. I figured I'd
let you guys take a stab at the computer-editing portion.

Hey all-

I've been messing around making DVD's for a while now, mostly for the
purpose of transferring my VHS home videos to disc. I use Sony Movie
Studio and DVD Architect, which works great, but I don't have a lot of
time to spend on the project, and I've decided that many of the tapes
aren't worth putting a lot of effort into editing, but I still want
them on disc. So, I bought a Pioneer DVR-220 standalone recorder
(similar to the 225, and a watered down version of the 320), and I love
the way that's going. It records to DVD-RW or -R, and on RW's can
record to VR mode or DVD-Video mode. I want to be able to play the
discs in any player, so I choose DVD-video for the best chances of
that.

Here's the problem: I want better control over my chapter points. In
DVD-Video mode, the recorder just makes a chapter point every 10
minutes. A lot of my tapes are live recordings of bands I've been in,
so I want the chapter points between songs. I don't care about cutting
out material in between or any other editing.

I've come up with three possible solutions:

1. Record in DVD-Video mode (RW media), take the disc over to the
computer, edit the chapter points, and burn to another disc. Is there
any software to do this fairly quickly and easily? I tried Nerovision
Express, but it wants to reencode the files. Can't the IFO's just be
edited?

2. Record in DVD-VR mode (which allows marking chapters from the remote
while recording), take the disc over to the computer and convert it to
a video mode disc. I haven't found any reports of software which can
do this reliably. Anyone had any luck?

3. Get a new DVD recorder (it's not too late to return the Pioneer).
I've concluded (from reading product manuals) that the -RW/-R recorders
can't mark chapters in DVD-Video mode. I read the manual for the Sony
RDRGx300, which can do both + and -, but it says that you can only make
manual chapters for -RW discs in VR mode. Do any other + recorders
allow this? I can't swing the cash for a HD-based recorder right now.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Korey Atterberry
