I have taken a home DVD & converted to mpeg-2 via DVDx. I now want to
import it into Vegas so I can edit it. When I import it into the media
pool, Vegas starts building the "peak files" for the audio
portion....and then Vegas locks up in the middle of building them. What
are these files, why is Vegas locking up, & how can I get around it?
Thanks

Is Vegas crashing or just not completing the building of the peak files?
You don't need the peak files if your sure the audio is there, or need to
see where it starts and ends.
If Vegas is crashing and then closing you may want to re-install Vegas. Also
make sure you have plenty of hard drive space for temp files and the peak
files.
Good luck.

Found out that Vegas can not handle AC3 audio files, which is what DVDx
converts the audio to. So now I need to find a DVD to mpg convertor
that converts the audio to a format Vegas can use.

For audio converters, try AC3 Decoder from
http://www.users.on.net/~rsobon/ac3dec.html
or BeSweet from http://dspguru.notrace.dk/
