Codecs are there for use with any NLE software. Use your function for
creating a new AVI file. Whenever you export (create) a new file use the
settings dialog to make choices of codec, etc. It's the same whether you use
Vegas, Premiere, MediaStudio, or animation programs which can save in the
AVI format.

Not sure about Premiere Pro (although I assume it's similar) but with Vegas
you can select any codec you have installed on your system. Render As -
Custom - Video - Video format.
This will frameserve an avi file that you can then use your with third party
encoder at the same time. (I'm assuming that when you said 'codec' you meant
that you wanted to use something other than the encoder included with Vegas.
Say Cinema Craft or Tsmpgenc for example. I'm partial to the CinemaCraft
encoder and do this all the time.
