Wireless networking card on a laptop says that there is strong signal, but
does not connect to internet. Tried to release and renew the ip address
using ip config, but new ip address cannot be obtained. Manually entered in
ip address, default gateway, and several dns addresses and worked for about 2
days. When it stopped working, it would not respond to the manual
configuration. Laptop has a wireless ethernet card, whose connection is on a
(windows supplied) network bridge with the hard line connection. Any
suggestions as to what to do?

Hi
You need to describe the nature of your Internet connection and the hardware
used, otherwise it is not cleared how your system should be configured. I.e.
The Laptop is suppose to connect to what in order to obtain Internet
connection?
What can be Wireless Cable/DSL Router. Access Point. Wireless Modem/Router
combo.
You might need to configure the devices via wire before you can use the
Wireless.
In general: Wireless - Basic Configuration:

It's a linksys wired/wireless router with a generic wireless ethernet card
attempting to connect to a cable connection 20 feet away through one wall.
Should I try and set everything up with the laptop (running xp pro sp2)
wired and then set up the wireless?

Yes, that would be the best approach.
