I dont know what is happening but I just cant burn DVDs anymore, my DVD
burner is a Sony 16x, brand new, my computer should be powerful enough too,
I burned DVDs earlier this week without problem, but now it's impossible, I
just trashed 5-6 discs in a row trying to burn an image. I tried both nero
and clone DVD, no more luck, it usually fails at 25-50%. The error I get
looks like this in nero:

I don't know if this will solve your problem, but are your CD drives
[assuming you have 2] both connected to the same IDE channel?

I had a burning problem with Pinnacle Studio 8 and DVD Shrink which I
think i've now sorted. Both the DVD drives I had were connected as
master and slave on the same IDE channel. Pushing one of these across
to be a slave on the other IDE channel seems to have solved the
problem.

Good luck.

I had Nero and returned it because it was erratic, not sure if this is the
case with you. I would make sure that you do not have something running in
the back ground like your modem or virus scanning while you are burning. I
would try to reinstall the program and try again.

I know that it is expensive, but I have used Adobe Encore and it is rock
solid.

No, I had nothing running in background, and it is weird that I could make
some DVDs earlier (Using both nero and clone DVD) but now nothing works, it
works 25-50% of the disc and then it fails. Also I noticed that my burner
takes a LOT of time "reading" a blank when I put one in. I'm thinking the
burner is the problem, which is strange because it's brand new. I use the
same discs as always.

Is burning an image thougher than burning VOB files?

Any new programs been installed recently? Is this computer on the
Internet? Might be worth doing a virus scan and running Ad-Aware.

The first week of use is when electronic gear commonly fails.
Perhaps your burner's just gone bad.

I had similar problems with varying error messages which didn't help to pin
down the problem. When I unplugged my cable modem router and plugged the
plug on my USB hub, my DVD burning problems were solved. It's worth a try.

I should have said "unplugged" both times -- the router and the USB hub.

Hum, I dont think I can do that, I have 2 hard drives using the other IDE,
could I switch the extra HD for the DVD burner to end up with: boot HD +
DVDR on a channel and CDRW and extra HD on the other?

You are allowing the computer to give it's full attention to the DVD
burn, I hope? Not web surfing or running other applications under
it?

I had very similiar error message using the same burner, nero and an image, I
used daemon to mount the image and burn the vob files directly - worked fine

Try some of these suggestions:

Try defragmenting your hard drive.
Make sure you have plenty of space on the hard drive.
Try burning an image first.
Don't use your computer while burning a disc.
Try a different brand of disc as you may have some faulty discs.
You may have recently installed a program that's causing the problem.
Try writing at a slower speed.
Make sure the speed of the blank disc is less or equal to the maximum
speed of your drive when burning a disc.

Regards Brian

Adding to this:

Check the DMA mode for both the DVD and source Hard drive is correct.

Suspend (or better, exclude ISO files from) any Anti-Virus that could
be interfering with the image read.

Perform a 'test burn' first to see if that fails too (if so, you can
stop wasting disks whilst you debug the issue).

I also have been having a similar problem with my Sony DRU500A (damn
thing cost me $500 a while back!) I downloaded and ran Sony's "Drive
Check" for my model which writes to the disc and then reads as part of
it's test. It failed to complete the short writing portion. As part of
the test it allows you to send the test data to Sony. I did so
yesterday but have not yet received any reply. You might want to run
their Drive Check just to see what you get. I suspect my drive is just
going sour and am thinking of spending a whopping $79 for another! (And
use the Sony as a read-only since it does that quite well). By the way,
someone mentioned a lens-cleaner... are they safe to use? I thought I
read somewhere that it was not advisable(?).
Thanks, Marty

1. Make sure you're computer is 100% virus, trojan, infection free.
2. Make sure you are using good media - eg. Maxell DVD discs.
3. Make sure the burner has the very latest firmware update.
4. Make sure Windows has the lastest updates.
5. Make sure there are no background applications, virus scanners, etc.
running. Even disconnect the PC from the Internet physically, disable
the network interfaces under device manager, and maybe even turn
everything else off at that point through msconfig.exe.

If the above fails, usually a bad drive - return and get another.

Keep in mind the latest Sony DVD burners are OEM'd from Taiwan's
LiteOn, so quality will be okay, but not as good as the top-of-the-pack
Pioneer A08 burners (very reliable overall, very good burns on most
media). Firmware updates will help a lot (see talk re: this in forums
at www.cdfreaks.com and www.rpc1.org); the wrong firmware version will
actually degrade performance.

Check and swap cables for a new one.

Check and swap power cables.

Check PC power supply.

Test burner on another PC. If it works, then it's either a software
or hardware problem on the original PC. Here, easiest is to wipe 100%,
reinstall Windows + drivers from scratch w/nothing else and test burner.
if that fails, hw problem on the PC is most likely.

--

Burners do fail, so don't worry about that. Sometimes, you may have
gotten a box that someone dropped to the floor at the store, then put
back on the shelf. Not good at all for the sensitive laser head that
requires exacting alignment, or for the motor/belts inside most drives.
(Actually, the LiteOn/Sony's are better in this regard vs. other
drives - they use direct drive gears instead of rubber belts that will
someday break.)

The Nero diagnostic is telling you what the problem is: DMA is turned off.

Fix: Turn on DMA for all IDE channels.
