Is there any SW that will allow me to record broadcast TV to the PC
hard drive is a standard editable format and also enable the standard
TIVO functions of pause/delay/burn to DVD/etc? I found that the Media
Center PCs do not allow editing of the shows saved because the
programming is saved on disk in a format for which we have no editor...

If you have an ATI All-in-Wonder or Video Capture card, the ATI
MultiMedia Center software has some TIVO like features and also records
in any variety of formats (avi's, mpeg-1 and mpeg-2).

Is it particularly painful to simply buy a TiVo? The convenience of
the purpose-designed, full time UI hasn't even been duplicated by
stand-alone competition, much less a PC based system.

TiVo hardware is more or less free, but while the stand-alone
subscription is a nuisance, it's not the end of the world. And as you
know, unless you've never been button-holed by a TiVo owner, there's
something about owning one that will almost instantly affirm your
decision. I even convinced the world's cheapest co-worker to buy one
last year, and about two days later he was singing with the choir.

TiVo, with the world's worst marketing, ought to lend them out for
free for 90 days. I doubt they'd get many back.

Cyberlink's PowerDirector and Nero Express will both allow editing of MS-DVR
files with the ability to save as MPEG1, MPEG2 or AVI format.
