Hi,
Maybe this is a dumb question, but I can't figure it out, so here it
is: is there a stand-alone (that is, not an optical drive in a
computer) DVD player that will read (play) and MPEG2 file? What I mean
is: can I just burn a video file in .mpg format, on my computer, and
then play it on my stand-alone DVD player (Philips DVD711), without
authoring it in that .VOB format?
I've tried it already on my DVD player and it didn't work (spit out the
DVD), but I am not sure that's because mine is an older player, or
because it just can't be done yet.
I noticed some of the newer models can read MPEG4 (DivX), but I wanted
to make sure what's going on before I buy one.
The keep extensive lists of players and what formats they support.

I doubt you'll find a stand-alone box that does this. My question is
why would you even do this? If your MPEG2 file is DVD-compliant, then
there are a bunch of programs that can author a DVD from this. If you
don't want to invest in such a program, try a 30-day trial of
DVDAuthor, or DVD-Lab.

Reason is, I just installed a Hauppauge PVR 150 TV tuner in my
computer. With it, I can program-record directly to a dvdrw, but only
in mpeg1/2 formats (and others that they call "DVD standard/lp/slp",
but which are essentially still mpegs of various compression rates).
So in this case recording directly to dvdrw no longer makes sense since
I still have to author the files with one of the programs I already
have.

I was curious about the same thing, so I burned a mpeg-2 to a dvd and
gave it a shot on my Yamaha DVD-S540. To my surprise, up popped a
directory screen! Root, file and all. The file was already highlighted,
so I just hit enter on the remote and bang, the file played. So yes, it
can be done.
